Carolyn Hutchinson, owner and designer of Carolyn’s In Stitches will be sharing a “Mini
Trunk Show”, highlighting her series of patterns called “Magic Tricks”. Her designs are a
combination of traditional and modern. Many of her designs came from asking “What if…?”
This series of patterns is the perfect example. Attempting to simplify the piecing of a
complicated design, Carolyn created a technique that rendered a totally unexpected block.
While the created block was initially not the desired result, and some would have cast them
aside and started over, she continued to play “What if?”

The result was the first quilt in this series called, “Windfarm”. Continuing to experiment with
color selection, strip rotation and different combinations of both, six additional quilts
emerged.

All of these designs are made from a combination of 2 ½” and 5” strips, with no small pieces.
After the first seven in this series were published, Carolyn experimented with using only 2
½” strips and three additional patterns were “born”. These patterns were just released at
her Spring Retreat.

While Carolyn used lots of geometry and math in creating and writing these patterns, all the
hard work has been done, leaving only very easy piecing that goes together quickly. Two of
the patterns, “Hinged” and “Line Dancing” make two different quilts at the same time.
